Bonnie’s Chirp Buddies are so darn cute, I knew I had to make something with them. Since we collect salt-glazed birdhouses, a welcome sign seemed in order.

Remember Bonnie’s Hoop ‘n Sew Twitter Pages, the notebook cover project you can make in the hoop? Bonnie used cork fabric and GlitterFlex, so I thought I would give it a try with my welcome banner.

I chose Chirp Buddy 9, mainly because I love the wild “hair,” and decided to change the purple color to blue to match my birdhouses.

I squared up the cork piece and hooped it with my magnetic Snap Hoop Monster. Otherwise, you would just float it in the hoop on a medium tear-away. The design stitched beautifully, as all of Bonnie’s designs do. I did find that I had to increase my fusing time/temperature on the cork since it is more dense than quilting cotton.

Cork is wonderful because it needs no edge finishing. When embroidery is finished, just fold over the top edge to the back and glue to make a hanging sleeve.

In retrospect, I should have stitched my text in a darker color so it would stand out more. I guess that is how we all learn!
