Whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned pro, certain items are necessary for machine embroidery! We have so many resources available for tips, tricks, and machine embroidery education. Just click the highlighted links below for more information on the following necessities. Many of these blogs also include links to videos.
Thread
Most machine embroidery designs are digitized for the standard 40 wt. thread and types range from silk and rayon to polyester and cotton. Read more about choosing thread types here.
Specialty threads, like metallics, are gorgeous but can also be intimidating. Get tips for stitching with metallic threads here.
Bobbins
Bobbins come in different sizes and thread weights and some produce more lint than others. Learn more about bobbins here. Curious about whether pre-wound bobbins are for you? This blog will help.
Stabililzers
Stabilizers are essential to machine embroidery as a foundation for stitches. There are so many options for stabilizing your projects that it may make your head spin. This blog will help you determine whether tearaway or cutaway works best for which projects.
Each stabilizer type also comes in light, medium, and heavy weights. Bonnie has a couple of great charts on what stabilizer weights mean and when to use them here.
You may prefer a good all-around stabilizer. For in-the-hoop (ITH) projects, water-soluble stabilizers are quite popular.
Many stabilizer manufacturers have sample packs for purchase that provide several different types to try. It is a great way to get a feel for what is out there.
Adhesives
Whether they are spray, glue sticks, or tape, adhesives are necessary for holding fabrics, zippers, and batting in place, especially when stitching ITH projects. You can read more about different adhesives here.
Needles
The type of needle that you use makes a significant difference in your finished product. See how to choose the right needle for the job here. You may find that titanium needles are preferred. Not sure how long to use a needle before replacing it? This blog will help.
