Santa Buddies Basket

This adorable fabric basket can become your gift bag!

Bonnie’s Santa Buddies are a favorite this time of year so, of course, I had to try Santa 8 on this fabric basket tutorial I found at AppleGreenCottage.com. They have a video to watch, if you prefer.

I chose a heavy muslin-type fabric for the outside and a matching plaid for the lining. Apple Green Cottage showed dimensions for three sizes of baskets that can be nested. I chose the large size.

Start by cutting two outside fabric pieces and two lining pieces. Mine were 22” x 18.” Embroider in the center of the square of one outside fabric piece. Fuse a medium-weight interfacing, one inch smaller all around, to the back of each lining piece. Also fuse a fleece batting to the back of each outside piece and make them one inch smaller all around.

Cut out the bottom corners of all outside and lining pieces according to the chart from Apple Green Cottage. Mine were 5.25” x 5.25.”

Sew one outside piece to one lining piece along the top of the piece (the end opposite the corners). Do the same for the other. Press seams open. I used a pressing cloth over the fusible fleece to keep it from melting.

Pair up each set of outside/lining, right sides together (outside fabric to outside fabric and lining to lining). SewTites work great with this type of project instead of using pins. Stitch along each side, down to the corner. Stitch along the lower piece on both as well, leaving several inches open in the middle of the lining “tab.”

Box the corners by pinching on a diagonal and lining up seams. AppleGreenCottage.com has better photos than mine.

Once the corners are boxed reach through the opening you left in the bottom of the lining pieces and turn the basket right side out. Close the opening in the lining and press if necessary.

You still have a few days if you would like to make a few of these as décor, cookie holders, or gift baskets.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a blessed new year!

Irene—It’s a team effort as I couldn’t do it all by myself for sure. Thank you so much. It’s great to hear you enjoy the site.
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas from Texas (where it’s supposed to be 85 degrees on Christmas this year). =)
