It is not too early to make your Christmas list and I’ll tell you about a must-have program you will love for under $45.
In her Shopping for Software blog, Bonnie discussed the difference between editing software and digitizing software. For a basic embroidery design editing software, Bonnie likes Embrilliance, and that is my choice as well. (Neither of us have any affiliation with BriTon Leap, the maker of Embrilliance.)
Another of their programs, Embrilliance Thumbnailer, is a fantastic tool you may want to add to your Christmas list.
Why Thumbnailer?
The biggest benefit of Embrilliance Thumbnailer, and other programs like it, is that it allows you to see what the file looks like without opening it in editing software or loading it on your embroidery machine.
The standard Details view on your computer, thumb drive, or portable hard drive just shows the file names. Unless you are very familiar with the design, it's name probably won't tell you much.
Viewing Thumbnail Icons
With Thumbnailer installed, a tiny icon of the image design shows even in Details mode.
(Bunny Buddies designs here.)
If the view mode is changed to Large Icons, the design image icons are large enough that you can actually see which design is which.
Seeing the design images also helps tremendously when filing and organizing your files. More on that later.
Embrilliance Thumbnailer is running a $5 off sale right now. Maybe Santa can come early?

Barbara—Thumbnailer is a program built by the same company that designed Embrilliance. It is a stand alone program and a separate program from Embrilliance. If you do have Embrilliance, you’ll be able to see your designs as tiny icons without opening Buzz Tools or any other embroidery software. You can double check with customer service at Embrilliance to see if you have Thumbnailer or not. =)

Hi Connie, I have Buzz Explore which shows design pictures, what is the difference with Thumbnailer? I also have the full set of Embriliance so would Thumbnailer be part of that or would I now have to purchase this? Thanks for your help. Kind regards. Barbara

Judy—Thumbnailer is a stand alone program. That means it will work all by itself with no other software needed to operate it. I would recommend you get some editing software at some point—that’s all most embroiderers need. =)
