It is hard to believe that it is October already! The way time has been flying, I thought I should stitch up something cute for Halloween. Of course, Bonnie’s Spooky Buddies are perfect! Since I already did a glow-in-the-dark project using the owl, and an apron using the bat, I thought the black cat should have a turn.
I recently purchased some Blank White Pennant Flags from Hobby Lobby, thinking that they would be handy for quick decorative projects. They are made of canvas and come with a dowel rod hanger so there is no finish work.
Magnetic hoops are ideal for projects like this where it is difficult to hoop the fabric. I positioned the stabilizer in the hoop and drew around the inside of the hoop to mark its position.
I used the area shown in the dashed box, the square part of the pennant, as the place to center the design. I centered the square area of the pennant inside the drawn area on the stabilizer.
Since it is also an odd shape, I taped the pennant to the stabilizer along the top and sides to help keep it from shifting while positioning it in the hoop. Once hooped, I added a basting stitch before starting embroidery to further ensure that the pennant did not shift on the stabilizer. (Note: Most embroidery machines have the option available to add a basting stitch and customize it's size to fit the embroidery design.)
I embroidered the Spooky Buddies cat as directed except that I made his snout black rather than a charcoal grey (my grey thread was not dark enough to show up on the grey GlitterFlex.
After embroidery, just trim stabilizer close to the stitching on the back and it is ready to hang.
